Opposition Parties Supporting Peace Process with Eritrea

Addis Ababa June 29/2018 Opposition political parties said that they are ready to support the ongoing efforts geared towards normalizing the situation with Eritrea. Representatives of opposition parties whom ENA have talked expressed readiness to support the normalization process. Desalegn Mathewos, Head of Legal Department, Coalition for Unity and Democracy (Kinijit) said it is their desire that the two countries have restore peace. “We support and encourage diplomatic efforts towards resolving the situation. We Standing by the side of the Prime Minister, we work for the enhancement of people-to-people relations,” he said. Yeshiwas Asefa, Chairman of Semayawi Party said that he is optimistic about the ongoing reform. He said everyone has a responsibility to consolidate the reform, in order to protect it from being hijacked. “As Dr Abiy said, there is always a wind of change in Ethiopia, however, always hijacked and resulting in tremendous problem. I think we are at the time that needs the responsible move of everyone. Ongoing efforts with Eritrea and other neighboring efforts are promising,” he said. The All Ethiopian Democratic Party is among the parties that express support to the ongoing reform through its Secretary-General, Zemenu Mola. “We expect to see good things through the efforts started to normalize the situation with Eritrea. We have been expressing our support to him [Abiy Ahmed] since the Prime Minister took office,” he added. After almost two decades of tension, the relationship between Ethiopia and Eritrea is showing progress following Ethiopia’s peace proposal presented through its new Prime Minister. The three-day visit of the Eritrean high-level Eritrean and the talks conducted between the delegation and the Prime Minister is considered as a milestone in the normalization of the relationship.
