BRICS Membership Elevates Ethiopia’s Diplomatic Standing in Global Politics: UK based Independent Researcher

Addis Ababa August 25/2023(ENA):-BRICS membership advances Ethiopia's diplomatic standing in global politics, according to the UK based Independent Researcher on Ethiopian Law, Politics and National Security Blen Mamo.

Ethiopia’s bid to join the emerging-markets bloc of Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa (BRICS) was endorsed at the 15th BRICS Summit in Johannesburg, South Africa, yesterday.

In his statement following the endorsement, Prime Minister Abiy said his country's endorsement to join the BRICS bloc will contribute a lot in realizing South-South cooperation.

Ethiopia has always been a champion and defender of multilateralism, he noted, pointing out that the “BRICS is indeed one key initiative responding to the repeated calls for a new and inclusive multilateralism.”

In an exclusive interview with ENA, Blen Mamo, the UK based Independent Researcher on Ethiopian Law, Politics and National Security, said BRICS membership will elevate Ethiopia's diplomatic standing in global politics.

“The nation has transcended its role as a significant regional power, now emerging as a pivotal player with both the access and capacity to directly shape the future of the emerging multipolar global order,” she added. 

According to the researcher, BRICS membership criteria range from the state's geopolitical importance to the size of economy and so forth. 

“If you review all such criteria, Ethiopia's acceptance into the BRICS, a group of emerging economies and geopolitical powerhouses, showcases not only Ethiopia's diplomatic capital, but also the fact that Ethiopia has a huge economic potential that could contribute towards strengthening the BRICS and develop the nation itself.”  

Blen stressed that Ethiopia should exploit the opportunity to ensure the prevalence of an equitable and fair global political order. 

Moreover, “Ethiopia should exploit the opportunity to ensure the prevalence of an equitable and fair global political order. And it should also make sure that it gets the maximum economic benefit out of it through sustainable trade, investment and tech initiatives.”
