PM Abiy’s Medemer Relevant in Building Future Generation: Pakistan’s Secretary of Education

Addis Ababa November 20/2023(ENA) Medemer, a political and economic thought of Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, is pertinent to the education sector for building a future generation, Pakistan’s Secretary for the Federal Education Ministry said.

Ethiopia’s embassy in Pakistan unveiled the “Medemer Generation” book over the weekend, authored by the prime minister, that embodies an idea, a philosophy, and a framework for nation-building through synergy.

The ceremony for unveiling the book was held at the Embassy of Ethiopia in Islamabad, which was attended by a large number of politicians, government officials, parliamentarians, diplomatic communities, the media, and the civil society of Pakistan.

Speaking at the occasion,  Waseem Ajmal Chaudhry, Pakistan’s Federal Secretary for the Federal Education Ministry, said that Medemer is a generational viewpoint.

According to him, Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed's generational viewpoint focuses on not only the present but also the past for today.

The secretary added that Medemer, as a philosophical thought, emphasizes how the entire human life is interconnected with each other.

“Medemer philosophy encompasses synergy, synchronization, and exploring interdependence. This is what we all know: that the entire human life is kind of interconnected with each other. So this is a generational viewpoint that we should not focus on only the present and what is the past for today,” he said.

As Medemer also asserts the coming generation by thinking of tomorrow and today, Chaudhry noted that it is an area basically focused on education.

“So this Medemer philosophy is relevant... If we teach our kids a kind of competence, the skills, and the norms that are required to build generations and the future, I think it will only be done based on that thought.”

The Ethiopian Ambassador to Pakistan, Jemal Beker, said on his part that Medemer is an idea of a philosophy and paradigm that popularized Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed.

“Medemer is conceived, nourished, developed, and implemented by our successful leader, who is leading the second-most populous country in Africa,” the ambassador underscored.

He also elucidated the Medemer philosophy of Prime Minister Abiy, who is a Nobel Peace Prize winner, a champion of the green legacy, and an advocate for regional integration and pan-Africanism.

Noting that the unveiled book is the third one for the prime minister, Jemal stated that the premier shares his vision of Medemer (synergy): how to build up on the strength of the past, cultivate the potential of the present, and connect the future.

"Medemer spelled out a holistic recipe to build a better and stronger generation that hands down a perfect legacy to the next generation through further intergenerational connectivity.

There should be interconnectivity between the past, present, and future.  To this end, intergenerational connectivity is imperative for any nation-state building process, as Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed articulates in his book.

The ambassador further stated that Medemer thought it was laying a foundation and bringing about a significant change to boost national political, economic, and international competitiveness and to create a green society in Ethiopia.

He also elaborated on Ethiopia’s endeavors under the leadership of Prime Minister Abiy to deepen democracy and address the structural complexes necessary to achieve the aspirations of the country.

Jemal added Abiy has a great aspiration for defending the pan-Africanism agenda and regional integration in a changing world.

“The prime minister is keen to strengthen unity and solidarity among Africans to defend and preserve pan-Africanism, and he is playing his role along with other Africans to get a fair share and presentation in this evolving international politics. We are also considering regional integration as a motto for improving wellbeing and suitable development.”

In this regard, Ethiopia has great importance for regional integration within east Africa, across Africa, the Middle East, and the rest of the globe.

Regional integration will particularly complement Ethiopia’s desire to seek permanent access to the Red Sea through dialogue and a diplomatic approach, he emphasized.

In this case, the Red Sea remains a national security issue because of its geographical proximity and history, and mostly 90 percent of economic activity is done through this area.

Jemal underlined, “We are looking closely to work with our neighboring countries and regional allies as well to advance this cooperation that will enhance regional integration in this regard.”

Zafar Bakhtawari, President of the Africa-Pakistan Association, said that the Medemer philosophy is valuable for the people of Pakistan, as they face the same challenge in Ethiopia.

“There are so many things common in Pakistan and Ethiopia. The challenges are the same. So 'Medemer Generation is the most valuable book for the people of Pakistan. The Prime Minister of Ethiopia, Abiy Ahmed’s vision, thought, and philosophy are also very relevant to Pakistan. Thus, we can learn so much from this book and from the philosophy of Prime Minister Abiy.”
