PM Abiy Inaugurates Art Center Built in Yared School of Music, Addis Ababa University 

Addis Ababa, June 8/2024 (ENA) Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed inaugurated the Ashenafi Kebede Performing Arts Center built by the Addis Ababa University in Yared School of Music.

The art Center is named after Ethiopia’s renowned contemporary musical artist, composer, conductor, historical musicologist, music educator, novelist, and poet, Professor Ashenafi Kebede. 

The Premier on the occasion said "I am pleased to witness the inauguration of the Ashenafi Kebede Performing Arts Center at the Yared School of Music."

Abiy also indicated Ashenafi Kebede was not only an artist but also the first director of the Yared Music School. 

The new center’s director, Girma Yifrashewa, serves as a bridge between the past and the future of music in Ethiopia, he added.  

"Such continuity and linkage are essential in all our institutions. Music is powerful, and we must use this power to enlighten our youth," the premier underlined. 


 

Abiy said arts play a vital role in shaping future generations and enhancing our city’s capacity to attract tourism. We must fully utilize this potential.

He stressed that a lot of work is required to promote Ethiopia’s abundance arts, historical and cultural wealth.   

Yared School of Music has also responsibility to promote the history and culture of Ethiopia to the outside world, Abiy underlined.   

Yared School of Music  was founded in 1954 by the then Ministry of Education & Fine Arts as a full-fledged state-owned learning center for higher music training in the country.
