Amb. Terekhin Highlights Tangible Outcomes of Russian High Level Delegation’s Visit to Ethiopia in Bolstering Cooperation

Addis Ababa, February 27, 2025 (ENA) --- Russian Ambassador to Ethiopia, Evgeny Terekhin highlighted the tangible outcomes of the recent visit of Russian high level parliamentary delegation led by Valentina Matvienko, Speaker of the Federation Council of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation, to Ethiopia in bolstering cooperation in the area of health, education and investment.

Recently, Russian parliamentary delegation led by the chairperson of Russian Senate, Valentina Matviyenko paid three day visit to Ethiopia.

In addition a group of senators of the Russian Federation, the delegation included a high ranking team comprising of Russia’s Minister of Economic Development, Minister of Health, representatives from the Ministry of Finance, State Corporation Rosatom and the Russian Academy of Sciences.

Regarding this high level visit, the Pulse of Africa has made exclusive interview with Russian ambassador to Ethiopia,   Evgeny Terekhin.

The ambassador explained that the primary objective of the visit was to strengthen cooperation between legislative bodies, improve legal and regulatory frameworks, and ratify intergovernmental agreements to support the continued growth of bilateral relations.

Promoting trade and economic cooperation was also the other key objective of the visit.

Ambassador Terekhin highlighted the tangible outcomes of the visit in bolstering cooperation in the area of health, education and investment.

He mentioned that the ministries of health of Ethiopia and Russia have mutually agreed to enhance cooperation in the medical and pharmaceutical sectors.

Serious humanitarian aid, comprising medical equipment and pharmaceuticals, has been delivered and transferred to the Russian Red Cross Hospital in Addis Ababa.

Ambassador Evgeny Terekhin further explained that the Russian Ministry of Education and Science, in collaboration with Rossotrudnichestvo, has established a center of the Consortium “Russian-African Network University,” the Russian Language Center of the Nizhny Novgorod State Linguistic University, and the “Engineering Class” of the St. Petersburg State Electrotechnical University on the premises of the Pushkin Centre in Addis Ababa.

Russian businesses are expressing a keen interest in agriculture, energy, pharmaceuticals, mining, information and communication technologies, tourism and other sectors, the Ambassador indicated.

The Pulse of Africa has also asked Ambassador Terekhin on Ethiopia’s involvement in the BRICS bloc.

In his response, Ambassador said the beginning of Ethiopia’s full-scale participation in BRICS coincided with the year of Russia’s chairmanship in the association.

“Throughout 2024, we (Russia) made every effort to ensure the harmonious and swift integration of Ethiopia in to the works of this club of states representing the interests of the global majority.”

He added that this was undoubtedly facilitated by intensive contacts at the highest level. “It is enough to recall the active participation of Ethiopian delegation headed by Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed in BRICS summit in Kazan.”

Ambassador Evgeny Terekhin noted as a fast growing economy, Ethiopia makes a significant contribution to the collective strength of the BRICS and opens up wide opportunities for its members to enter the African continent.

One of the remarkable points of the Russian delegation’s visit was the opening of Sputnik Africa international News Agency.

Russian Ambassador to Ethiopia, said the establishment of the center holds immense importance and necessity, as it will not only advance Russian - Ethiopian cooperation but also the Russian-African partnership in the realm of media and the exchange of truthful and non-biased information.

The presence of such formidable information resource, embodied in Sputnik editorial center, will undoubtedly have a profound impact on Africa as a whole, Ambassador Evgeny Terekhin emphasized.
