Securing Sea Access Permanent Nat'l Security, Diplomatic Agenda: Institute of Foreign Affairs

Addis Ababa, March 22, 2025 (ENA) -- Ensuring Ethiopia's access to a sea outlet is a permanent national security and diplomatic agenda, Institute of Foreign Affairs (IFA) Executive Director Jafar Bedru said.

Responding to questions raised by members of the House of People's Representatives on Thursday, Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed said Ethiopia has demonstrated its commitment to cooperative development with neighboring countries over the past seven years.

Ethiopia's pursuit of sea access is based on the principle of mutual benefit and would be achieved through diplomatic dialogue, not conflict with neighboring countries, he affirmed.

In this respect, the prime minister has noted that different countries have recognized the legitimacy of Ethiopia's quest for sea access, he added.

The premier had also told the parliament that sea access is a generational and existential issue for Ethiopia, requiring universal understanding.

Commenting on the remarks of the prime minister, the executive director underscored the significant diplomatic successes achieved over the past seven years.

He cited Ethiopia's progress in fostering regional integration and shared development, joining BRICS, expanding its multilateral and bilateral diplomatic influence, and advancing domestic development projects.

Jafar attributed the increased international influence and recognition of Ethiopia to Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed's astute diplomatic approach.

Drawing parallels with developed nations that secured their long-term national interests through enduring diplomatic agendas, the executive director affirmed Ethiopia's commitment to safeguarding its lasting interests.

He highlighted the current government's public declaration of Ethiopia's desire for sea access as a key demonstration of its commitment to realizing the long-standing aspirations of the generation.

Jafar further stated that the issues of the Nile River and sea access are diplomatic agendas for Ethiopia's enduring national interests and national security.

According to him, the Institute of Foreign Affairs is developing and implementing strategies that support a strong state building mission and achieve intergenerational diplomatic endeavors.

He added that the institute will continue working diligently to elevate Ethiopia's international diplomatic influence and safeguard its national interests.
