Robust Air Connectivity Crucial to Realize AfCFTA, Says Transport and Logistics Minister

Addis Ababa, April 24, 2025  (ENA) -- The African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) will only thrive if supported by robust air connectivity, Transport and Logistics Minister Alemu Sime said.

Speaking at the first Ethiopian Aviation Forum that opened today, the minister noted that intra-Africa connectivity is a catalyst for economic integration.

The African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) will only thrive if supported by robust air connectivity, he stressed, adding that Ethiopian Airlines expansion into various hubs exemplifies the country’s Pan-African commitment.

Alemu urged African nations to liberate airspace, reduce barriers to cross border travel, harmonize regulations, foster a competitive and affordable air transport market.

“As we open skies, we open doors to prosperity,” the minister noted, encouraging the continent to invest in regional routes, unlock trade, tourism and investment potentials.

Tourism Minister Selamawit Kassa said Ethiopia’s national reform marked the beginning of a new chapter for the tourism sector which is elevating it to the top priority area for driving economic growth in the country.

The ministry was accordingly established as an independent entity in the wake of the reform to unlock Ethiopia’s vast tourism potential, she added.

The government’s large-scale destination development projects across various regions further demonstrates the importance placed on the tourism sector in Ethiopia.

According to Selamawit, “the role of aviation is more important than ever before in realizing this substantial growth we envision for the tourism sector.”

Ethiopian Airlines Group Chief Executive Officer Mesfin Tasew for his part emphasized the aviation industry’s pivotal role in driving Africa’s growth through integration, underscoring the power of collaboration to elevate African aviation and beyond.

The forum, running until April 25, 2025, has brought together government officials, aircraft manufacturers, global aviation stakeholders, and distinguished guests from around the world.
