Addis Ababa, April 25, 2025 (ENA) --- The Horn of Africa Initiative (HoAI) convened its 24th Ministerial Meeting today, marking a significant moment as Ethiopia concludes its chairmanship under the leadership of Minister Ahmed Shide.

The meeting held on the sidelines of the World Bank Group Spring Meetings brought together key stakeholders both in person and virtually, reflecting a shared commitment to the advancement of regional integration and development.

The Minister welcomed attendees and extended special recognition to Amit Dar, Acting Vice President of the World Bank and co-chair of the Ministerial.

He also welcomed Ndiamé Diop, the incoming Vice President of Regional Vice President for Eastern and Southern Africa to the initiative.

As the Ethiopian chairmanship comes to an end, Minister Ahmed Shide emphasized the importance of addressing pressing challenges facing the region, including conflict, climate shocks, and economic instability, all of which pose threats to sustainable development.

Ahmed noted the resilience of the region despite these adversities, reporting that two-thirds of the countries have achieved over 5 percent economic growth this year. This positive development underscores the potential for further progress within the Horn of Africa.

A key focus of the meeting was the enhancement of regional trade through the Trade Facilitation Roadmap.

Discussions included exploring potential “Quick Wins” and “High Gains” measures that aim to accelerate progress in regional integration efforts.

Finance Minister Ahmed Shide acknowledged the significant strides made in developing essential infrastructure projects, crediting development partners for their unwavering support.

As the chairmanship transitions to Somalia, Ahmed expressed confidence in the leadership of Minister Bihi Iman Egeh to guide the Initiative forward. "Together, we will continue to pursue our collective goals for the region," he stated.

The meeting served as a crucial platform for reinforcing collaborative efforts among stakeholders, while emphasizing the commitment to a shared mission of enhancing resilience, promoting sustainable development, and facilitating lasting partnerships.
