Learning Chinese Language Fosters Cultural Understanding, Science and Technology Transfer

Addis Ababa, April 25, 2025 (ENA) -- Learning Chinese language would help to foster cultural understanding and transfer of science and technology, Federal Technical and Vocational Training Institute Director General, Biruk Kedir remarked.

Chinese language day marked at the Federal Technical and Vocational Training Institute in Addis Ababa today with various performances showcasing talents, music and arts.

Speaking at the occasion, the Director General, Biruk Kedir said that the celebration of Chinese Language Day held at the institute is a commendable activity as it would contribute a lot for mutual understanding of cultures between the two countries.

Beyond connecting people, learning the language would immensely contribute for science and technology transfer to Ethiopia and the world at large, the director general added.

“Language is the bridge that connects people, culture and arts. By learning Chinese language, we are not only acquiring valuable skills but opening doors to the understanding of culture that has contributed immensely to the world in terms of philosophy, art, science and technology,” he elaborated.

The establishments of Chinese language centers such as Confucius Institute for Vocational Education in the country gives an additional opportunity for Ethiopians to learn Chinese language, enhancing mutual understanding of culture, science and art between the two countries.

In this respect, the Institute is working diligently to expand Chinese language in the institute, he stressed.

“Nowadays, people are increasingly interested in learning Chinese language because of its value in science, technology and other field. So, we are working diligently to expand Chinese language in the institute. Yearly, graduates are expected to even learn Chinese language as an additional course in the institute,” Biruk elaborated.

On her part, Counselor of Culture at Chinese Embassy in Ethiopia, Zhang Yawei said that the celebration of Chinese Language Day would present not just the history and culture embodied by the language, but also the Chinese philosophy of advocating harmony and coexistence.

Emphasizing the longstanding bilateral cooperation between Ethiopia and China in various sectors, the Counselor reiterated that the exchange of language will advance and deepen mutual learning among cultures between peoples of the two countries.

Moreover, she added that language would foster collaboration in various socioeconomic spheres while promoting peace and development.
